Mod - Jiayu G2 (all models) GPS fix

Hi all,
as pointed out in the Jiayu G2 review, there are 3 or 4 minor issues with the stock rom that can be easily fixed in few steps.

Today we are going to fix the GPS issue.

The first thing to do is download the free app FasterGPS from the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=en

Once downloaded, execute it, grant it SuperUser privileges and then set it according to the desired country and location. After this, exit the app.

Now download and install the app GPS Helper from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.fabrizioalberti.gpshelper

It's not a free app, so if you want to buy it go for it, if not you can search a "free" version on google.

After installing it, just go outdoor and wait the satellite fixing (6-7 satellites should be available).

Once they are fixed, it's done.

Exit from the app and use the phone normally.

The GPS should now fix the satellites in few seconds each time it's used.

The GPS system

Cheers
kok

  1. I tried this on LEWA stable rom, i find up to 11 satellites (in Europe) but its not fixing anything and after like 20 minutes it has only 1 satellite and without fix. Is it cause of the custom rom or from the location settings? I have A-gps and EPO on, well basically everything in location settings is on.Any suggestions? (Btw thanks for the awesome post ^_^)

    1. Hi,
if you set your country with fasterGPS properly and then, once using GPS Helper you don't have any fix after 20 minutes, then the phone has a Software (maybe the modded rom. Which version did you install? The march 29th update?) or Hardware problem.

To double check the issue, try this:

Download Mobiluncle app from Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobileuncle.toolbox

Start the app and go to Engineer mode -> MTK -> Location -> Location based service

Once there go to the last tab (EPO) and activate the EPO (also tap on the update button)

Now go back to Location and select YGPS and check the satellites you have there. Go outdoor and try some test with the YGPS test option.

Note. You can also select to have the YGPS always active, to have an always connected GPS. This will obviously consume more battery but will give you instant fix.

      Cheers

    2. Thanks for the very fast reply! I installed today the stable version LeWa_ROM_JIAYU_G2S_JB_13.04.02.
Maybe i should instal the latest official rom cause the gps was working a bit with internet connection then. But i dont have any links with the official rom, do you have any?

    3. You are welcome :)

Regarding the official rom, just look in this same blog for the Jiayu G2H Jelly Bean 4.1.2 upgrade rom:

    4. I found this also http://www.pandawillforum.com/showthread.php?15775-ROM-Latest-Official-ROM-for-Jiayu-G2S-sku35691-(Jan-9th-2013-update) it says its for Jiayu G2S sku35671 (1gb ram & MTK6577) but mine has the MTK6577T.
I will search a bit more on versions for a best fit official one for my specific model and i decide which one to install.
I will try then in some hours cause im a bit busy atm and i will post as soon as i have any news! Thanks a lot again mate i really apreciate it!

      Cheers

    5. I thought you had a Jiayu G2 dual core 1GB, but the rom you posted is for the Jiayu G2S, a different model.

Just let me know the exact model you have, to point you out to the proper official JB 4.1.2 rom.

      Cheers

    6. I have the Jiayu G2s dual core 1GB (MTK 6577T).The only thing that worked a bit with LEWA ROM is these steps:
      1. Go to root/data/misc
      2. Delete the file mtkgps.dat
      3. Delete gps.conf if any
      4. Copy gps.conf in system/etc
      5. Restart phone
      6. Open engineering mode *#*#3646633#*#* or *#15963# and test GPS fix or download GPSTest.
But it finds only 1 satellite and the location is not accurate at all and stable. I think i must test in official rom only but i need the latest with all the fix to the previous issues such as screen.

    7. I would do the following:

      1. Go to root/data/misc
      2. Delete the file mtkgps.dat
      3. Delete gps.conf if any
      4. Restart phone
      5. Activate all the GPS help options (EPO and A-GPS)
      6. Open engineering mode *#*#3646633#*#* or *#15963# and enter Location
      7. Location based service
      8. Update the EPO
      9. Back to Location
      10. YGPS and start the fixing

If this is not working, then the Lewa rom has a bug

For the latest official G2S roms, you could try the ejiayu bbs (it's in Chinese, but with google transator you should be able to find what you are looking fo):

    8. WOW it finally worked!!!!! From the YGPS i selected only the auto dowload for EPO. I also used the https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.fabrizioalberti.gpshelper (GPShelper) and it found 11 sats and fixe 6. The location is not very accurate like 100-200 meters. Should i do any specific configuration in the YGPS section?

    9. :)
you should now monthly update the EPO data from the engineer menu.

For the accuracy, you have to keep the GPS on fixing until some other satellite is found&fixed and the accuracy is at least 20/30 meters.

      Cheers

    10. Which option is the fixing from engineer menu? cause i did it with the GPShelper program only. From The engineer menu i only updated the EPO.

    14. Ah also i want to ask at YGPS at GPS test section, in order to start the test i need to put some values.
Times 0-999 (how many times to test?)
Interval 0-999(s)(after how many sec to reconnect?)
and there is a box to check that says need 3d Fix. And where is the option to have always active the YGPS?

  3. Hello, I tried the same steps you described above with Mobile Uncl app. I also installed FasterGPS and GPShelper, but I cannot find any satellite. I was able to find one or two before, but mostly none. Should I update the ROM? I see Baseband version, Kernel version and build number... What should I check?

    1. Hi :)

Well, you didn't specify which ROM you are using at the moment.

      Have you root permissions?

If you have SU installed, then just open FasterGPS and select your country. Then exit from FasterGPS and reboot the phone.

Now go outside and look for a clear space, a park or a square would be perfect. There open GPS Helper and wait 20/25 minutes for it to seek, fix and store at least 9 satellites.

Once done, close GPS helper and you are done (just remember to update the EPO by Mobile uncle every 3 weeks/1 month)

      Cheers

  4. I have done all those things, did not work yet. I will have wait a bit longer underneath the sky :) I have no root permissions... Android version is 4.1.2, I found 20130306-143807. Do you recommend to install http://www.needrom.com/mobile/jiayu-g2s-13/

    1. That's the problem. Without root permissions Faster GPS cannot write the gps inf file. You have to root the phone and then do this procedure.

  5. Adolfo Verrini thanx 4 your awesome post. Greece reeds u!!!

I bought Haipai N7889 (a copy of Samsung I think), you can see the phablet here

    http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/239601665.html

The problem I have is that the search for satellites is a mess. Find with much difficulty.

I tried all the gps programs. At the moment in my phablet I have these 2

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps

    http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/tools/gps-notification-helper_fhyjm.html

    EPO (IDLE) stops at 25 percent in my phablet. but I think that the solution is here * # * # 3646633 # * # *

Through the code I download EPO (IDLE) at 100 percent but once I leave there and come full circle, the download I had made earlier has disappeared. Nevertheless, it would be better if i could upload somewhere pictures, there are many settings that may need to be done.

Is there any possibility of help???

    1. Well, if you did the previous step with Faster GPS and set your country correctly, it's really weird that you got less signal than before.

      the steps are the following:

1 - Set your country with Faster GPS (you need to have a rooted phone)

2 - Once done, exit from Faster GPS and turn off the phone

3 - Turn on the phone again and fo outside

4 - Start GPS helper and wait 15 minutes (20 max)

If you don't have any satellite shown, you can also download Mobile Uncle tools and use the YGPS features

      Cheers

  7. You know how can I use YGPS features?

    1. Once you are root, download Mobile uncle tools form the Pay store and then go to Engineer Menu -> MTK -> GPS (scroll to the right).

  8. Great guide! I have a problem implementing the advices, though...

The problem is, when I go to Mobiluncle app > Engineer mode -> MTK -> Location; both "Location Based Services" and "YGPS" are disabled (grayed out).
Do you know why is this and how to fix it?

ROM: I have a G2S with this rom: http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=627495 ("Jiayu G2S Android 4.1.2 por DAVID G v.4.0"). it is rooted and superuser is installed.

    Thanks
